We are heading into our last week of WE Inspire and we’d be lying if we said we aren’t a bit disappointed that this series is coming to an end. It’s been such a great three weeks but don’t worry, we are going to finish with a bang!
This week we are chatting with Kelli Miller, owner of Sugar Blossom Jewelry. Sugar Blossom is a fun jewelry line with a bohemian flare. All of the pieces are designed and created by Kelli. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of Sugar Blossom and who doesn’t own one (or five!) of her beautiful unique pieces.
Kelli always knew that she loved the fashion industry and initially started Sugar Blossom as a side business. When her husband’s career translated into a move to the U.S. Kelli decided to turn her side business into her full time career. Now, they are back in Winnipeg and her business is as successful as ever!
We are huge fans of Kelli and her work. Her pieces are not only beautiful, but well-made, fashion forward and timeliness. Thank you Kelly for being a part of this series! We know so many people will be excited to hear your story and celebrate your great success! We are so excited for everything to come for both you and Sugar Blossom!
WE: What would you consider your first big success?
Kelli: I’d say my first biggest success was about 2 years ago when One Plus One Design and I hosted our first pop-up shop. We had no idea what to expect, or if anyone would even come. We had never participated in any shows or pop-up shops before, so we made posters and advertised on social media. When the event was a success I felt a real sense of appreciation for the wonderful people in Winnipeg! It was that love to support local businesses and it gave me a new confidence in my jewelry.
WE: What was the biggest hurdle you faced when launching your new business? How did you overcome it?
Kelli: The biggest hurdle I had was deciding when to make Sugar Blossom my full time job, verses just my hobby. The unknown of running my own business full time and leaving a secure job was scary, but taking the leap was the best decision I’ve made.
WE: What is your favourite part about running your own business? What is the hardest part?
Kelli: My favorite part about running my own business is the creativity involved in it. I love designing the jewelry and coming up with ideas for photo shoots. I think the hardest part is balancing everything. It’s hard to “turn off” from work, when it’s your own business. I love my job, so most times it doesn’t even feel like work but you need to make time for family & friends.
WE: What is your number one piece of advice for any woman looking to start her own venture?
Kelli: I think my best piece of advice would be to test the market out first. After testing, if you think you have a great idea that people love, come up with a great way to market it and put your whole heart into it. Also, you can’t be great at everything, if you need to hire people for your website, marketing and so forth, you should invest the money as it will make your company that much better in the end. Giving up is the easy way out, so if you decide to go for it make sure you stick with it.
WE: How are you able to balance it all?
Kelli: I do struggle with balance. I think over time it has gotten easier, but at busy times of the year I still find it a bit of a struggle. I think having an agenda book and writing everything down (personal & work) is the best way to achieve balance for myself, otherwise I can get consumed by work.
WE: What is your secret to staying motivated and inspired?
Kelli: I like to stay motivated and inspired by travel. Seeing the world is such an incredible experience and always refreshes, recharges, and gives me new ideas.
WE: What would you say are your three top contributing factors to your success and growth?
Kelli: 1. Organization 2. Hard working 3. Persistence
WE: What would you say is your top piece of marketing advice for Women Entrepreneurs?
Kelli: Take pride in your marketing. I think it is the little details that count, so make sure you create a brand that you’re proud of.
Thanks again Kelli for sharing your insights with us! We wish you all of the success in the world and cannot wait to see what’s next for you and your amazing company!
